QUILTERS / THE MUSICAL

BOOK BY MOLLY NEWMAN & BARBARA DAMASHEK, MUSIC & LYRICS BY BARBARA DAMASHEK
1ST STAGE, 2023

The open, multilevel set by scenic designer Sarah Beth Hall made the staging and production feel as expansive as the prairie.

CAROLINE BECK / DC THEATRE ARTS

Sarah Beth Hall’s set design cleverly reinforces the play’s central motif. The warm, wooden stage mirrors the quilting blocks the characters assemble—a number of square and rectangular platforms span the back and sides of the stage. Above the platforms hang diamond- and square-shaped frames, each capturing a glimpse of the plains that serve as the backdrop to these women’s lives. The staging is bare but versatile, allowing the ensemble to move the set to take shelter from a tornado or brew an abortion tonic as needed.
