AKIRA KUROSAWA EXPLAINS HIS MOVIES AND YOGURT (WITH LIVE AND ACTIVE CULTURES!) / BY JULIA IZUMI

WORLD PREMIERE
WOOLLY MAMMOTH / 2025

Screens of various sizes dip down to background the action, with inter-titles initially meant to translate from Japanese giving way to transcribing Izumi’s private thoughts and what she is really thinking while saying something else. Clips from Kurosawa’s films are projected as truly larger than life, while clever use of on-stage cameras lets Izumi’s stage Kurosawas, and Izumi herself, examine the truth that comes from staring down a lens.

PETER ORVETTI / MARYLAND THEATRE GUIDE

As a whole, it creates a stripped down yet expansive, and contemporary yet classic look and feel onstage.
